Occupy Phoenix to Protest at ALEC Summit on November 30

We will no longer remain passive while our country is sold to the highest bidder.

Phoenix, AZ 11/22/11 — On November 30, Occupy Phoenix will lead a protest at the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) States & Nations Policy Summit at Scottsdale’s Westin Kierland Hotel. The 99% will be joined by members of other local groups and Occupiers from other cities as they answer a national call for action against this heinous organization.

The protests shine a light on the corporate takeover of state legislatures. Via ALEC, corporations hand legislators changes to laws that directly benefit their bottom line, such as Arizona’s notorious SB 1070. Currently 35 AZ State Representatives and 15 AZ Senators have ties to the organization. Recently recalled Senate President Russell Pearce is a member of ALEC’s Public Safety and Elections Task Force Executive Committees.

ALEC is at the core of what is wrong with our political system today. This organization promotes and enacts the sale of local and national legislation. We will no longer remain passive while our country is sold to the highest bidder.

I want to express appreciation to you just for rescuing me from this

matter. Right after surfing around through the internet and
    finding

things which are not beneficial, I thought my life was

well over. Being alive without the presence of

answers to the difficulties you have

resolved by way of your entire blog post is a critical case, and ones which could have adversely

damaged my entire career if I hadn’t come across your website. Your own capability and kindness in taking care of the whole thing was helpful. I don’t know what I
would’ve done if I had not come upon such a point like this. I am able to at this point look ahead to my future. Thanks very much for your reliable and

    amazing guide. I won’t

think twice to recommend your web sites to anyone who

    needs care

    on this problem.

    Big V,

It wouldn’t be so bad if we just, as you say, “show them the door.” But, thanks to ALEC and private prison contractors, there are now laws requiring that undocumented workers/illegal laborers (let’s not quibble over words, both are correct) be held in detention, by these same private contractors, at taxpayer expense, under the theory that holding them for 4 to 6 months will break them and deprive them of funds with which they could pay a coyote to help them re-enter the US. The prison contractors benefit, again, at taxpayer expense. They do provide crappy, low-pay, low-benefit jobs for US workers guarding the prisoners; is that what you want for your kids? If you think that’s a good way to deal with the economic refugees from Mexico and central America, I can’t agree. Remember, it’s the middle class of those nations who are fleeing crappy conditions at home. Poor Mexicans and central Americans can’t afford to make the journey.

There has got to be a better way…

Alec is equal to terrorist group and should hold this meeting to the open meeting laws. I am not personally about group overseas but this group is not and will always do harm than good. These people need to be investegated and all politicial former and present should be investigated. If they are an investigated and found guilty should be arrested and sent to normal state prison/not the country club.

  5. TomAlt says:

The problem with SB1070 is that it is a distraction. It is intended to keep the populace busy while politicians do their dirty work and avoid addressing our real problems. Jobs have primarily disappeared due to corporate outsourcing, not immigration (undocumented or otherwise). Loss from outsourcing exceeds immigrant ‘job theft’ easily by a ratio of 100 to 1 or more. However, scapegoats help the politicians maintain ‘cover’ for the evil they are doing.

  6. ALva Myrdall says:

Why abolish the current Congress? The Congress has taken the oath to uphold the Constitution but with impunity they sold our trust to the corporations. The Congress has the absolute power to prevent, defend, protect the best interest of the people. Not the Executive ,not the Judiciary but the Congress.

They sold us to the highest bidder to continue their self serving agenda. The corporations have no responsibility to the country , we can only hope that they do the right thing but the Congress do & yet they chose their pocketbooks than what their oath is.

So I say, we must hold the Congress accountable above anybody else. Fire all of them including those who keep their mouth shut when they know full well that their silence pose a detriment to the economy of our nation.

It’s time to held people accountable, starting in the Congress. It’s time to bring honesty, ethics & moral values back to our government. They wouldn’t until we the people make them.

  7. Big V says:

What’s wrong with SB 1070? Isn’t that the law that tries to protect our economy from the illegal labor that has been hurting us so badly? If people are here illegaly, then why shouldn’t a cop be asked to show them the door?

    1. Steve Jones says:

Sorry, Big V, I should have left the above post as a reply.

  8. O Anderson says:

Well done Occupy Phoenix (OP), you guys and gals are great!! Thank you for taking a stand against corruption and greed. My injured body cannot come out to join you very often, but I will come out for the victory celebrations.
Remember this: When people have stood against their own government, in history, they have never failed.
And this: successful revolutions typically only have a core group of about 5% of the population as a very dedicated group, others come out when they see a tipping point.
We’ve seen numbers swell in Portland and Oakland, and NYC as they threatened to close the parks. People are watching… and the pepper spraying is igniting national debates with humanitarian concerns.
    Well Done, and well done!
